The Alexander Polynomial of a 3-Manifold and the Thurston Norm on Cohomology

چکیده
Let M be a connected, compact, orientable 3-manifold with b1(M) > 1, whose boundary (if any) is a union of tori. Our main result is the inequality ‖φ‖A ≤ ‖φ‖T between the Alexander norm on H(M,Z), defined in terms of the Alexander polynomial, and the Thurston norm, defined in terms of the Euler characteristic of embedded surfaces. (A similar result holds when b1(M) = 1.) Using this inequality we determine the Thurston norm for most links with 9 or fewer crossings.

The Thurston Norm, Fibered Manifolds and Twisted Alexander Polynomials
Every element in the first cohomology group of a 3–manifold is dual to embedded surfaces. The Thurston norm measures the minimal ‘complexity’ of such surfaces. For instance the Thurston norm of a knot complement determines the genus of the knot in the 3–sphere. We show that the degrees of twisted Alexander polynomials give lower bounds on the Thurston norm, generalizing work of McMullen and Tur...
متن کاملOn McMullen’s and other inequalities for the Thurston norm of link complements
In a recent paper, McMullen showed an inequality between the Thurston norm and the Alexander norm of a 3-manifold. This generalizes the well-known fact that twice the genus of a knot is bounded from below by the degree of the Alexander polynomial. We extend the Bennequin inequality for links to an inequality for all points of the Thurston norm, if the manifold is a link complement. We compare t...
متن کاملNon–commutative Multivariable Reidemeister Torsion and the Thurston Norm
Given a 3–manifold the second author defined functions δn : H (M ;Z) → N, generalizing McMullen’s Alexander norm, which give lower bounds on the Thurston norm. We reformulate these invariants in terms of Reidemeister torsion over a non– commutative multivariable Laurent polynomial ring. This allows us to show that these functions are semi-norms.
متن کاملAlexander and Thurston Norms of Fibered 3-manifolds
For a 3-manifold M , McMullen derived from the Alexander polynomial of M a norm on H(M,R) called the Alexander norm. He showed that the Thurston norm is an upper bound for the Alexander norm. He asked if these two norms were the same when M fibers over the circle. Here, I give examples that show this is not the case. This question relates to the faithfulness of the Gassner representations of th...

We introduce twisted Alexander norms of a compact connected orientable 3-manifold with first Betti number bigger than one generalizing norms of McMullen and Turaev. We show that twisted Alexander norms give lower bounds on the Thurston norm of a 3-manifold. Using these we completely determine the Thurston norm of many 3-manifolds which can not be determined by norms of McMullen and Turaev.
